22Oct – Homeward Bound

There’ s generally not a lot to relate on a departure day. Anyone that’s ever traveled has their own nightmare tales of bungled check-ins, TSA delays, customs hang-ups, etc. (Although I did get a rather thorough, full-body massage pat down from a burly Belgian at security!)

It’s been about the same here. (Although I did get a rather thorough, full-body massage pat down from a burly Belgian at security!)

Departure was challenging for GCCL. There was a marathon being held in Antwerp today that was going to close down part of our route out of town to the Brussels airport.

Our flight is at noon. (We’re sitting at the airport gate waiting while I write this.) I wrongfully thought that, for the first time in forever, we would NOT have to get up and out long before dawn to make our flight. We should have had hours to casually get to the airport. Wishful thinking. Roads were being blockaded at 7:30 AM. So, while it wasn’t a 3 AM departure, we did not get to enjoy a leisurely sleep-in morning.

Soo, one last story with picture: While Rob and I enjoyed a final breakfast nosh on the ship, I considered pulling one last little “joke” n Peg by secreting a mini tube of liverwurst somewhere on her person.

I had surprised yesterday with a tube in her jacket pocket. She found the stuff a bit vile…but her reaction to it was always good for a chuckle. And you never know how long it would have been before she discovered this little gift. (Its expiration date was November 15th. I’d hope by then.) And while the potential hilarity was enticing…but I thought better of it.

So, MDR, this brings our Romance of the Rhine and Mosel narrative to an end…for now. As it is well known, I have a tendency to fine tune at every re-reading, so I guess there’s never really an ending period, rather an eternal elipsis …
